Some degrees, such as those in nursing, teaching, and social work, require a mandatory work placement in a school, hospital or clinic for anywhere up to 1,000 hours. While these placements are a vital part of your study journey, stepping into a placement position can be financially challenging.

The Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP), could help

At Flinders University, eligible students undertaking courses with a mandatory placement in entry to practice courses can now receive financial support through the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP), introduced and supported by the Australian Government. This payment can help ease the financial burden of placement costs and ensures you can focus on your learning and practical training.

From July 2025, if eligible, you may be able to access up to $331.65 per week during your placement. 

Key Benefits of the Commonwealth Prac Payment

The Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) is designed to support students in programs such as nursing, teaching, midwifery, and social work who are required to undertake mandatory placements. This financial aid will assist around 68,000 students across Australia, including those studying at Flinders University, by covering the costs of:

• travel and accommodation, especially for placements located far from home or campus
• materials and uniforms, which will often continue to be useful in future employment
• general living costs during placement, allowing you to focus on your education.

The CPP provides $331.65 per week, offering vital support to students during unpaid placements. The maximum number of weeks students are eligible to receive this payment varies based on the course they are studying. These caps are set by the governments.
